Venus of Willendorf Figurine
Discovered in 1908 in a small village in Austria on the north bank of the Danube in between Spitz and Aggsbach Markt - during the construction of the Wachau railway – the Venus of Willendorf has been captivating people for over 100 years.
Also referred to as the woman of Willendorf this statuette was created between 28,000 - 22,000 B.C.E. The original figurine was carved from oolithic limestone that is not local to the area and is tinted with red ochre. This enchanting talisman is one of the oldest and thorough models of prehistoric art.
Many theories have been put forward as to what the figurine symbolizes. Perhaps a fertility or abundance figure, a good-luck totem or talisman, a maternal goddess symbol, or possibly an aphrodisiac.
